not a bad car, love all the blue. side pipes need to see a dumpster. I would start piecing a 435hp 427ci for it. Also I want to see paperwork for proof of factory 427. I think these cars are as hard to prove originality of a big block like a Camaro of the same year.

love the 327. great motor (might be biased as my 68 camaro has one), also 68 was the last year of them. Fun fact is that the 68 327 is a oddball one year only block.

The ABC pump for the R230 is typically around $1500 for the part, and $1k for dealer labor. Not too terribly bad, and they do ride like no other 2 seater convertible on the planet.

I prefer all of the cars I listed over the Corvette, and a couple over the SL55 too (Griffith, 3200GT etc), so it’s more a matter of personal preference I guess.

Kinja'd!!! RT > JR1

Kinja'd!!!0

But yeah, you can get a much better driving experience than the ‘Vette for $20k. A old car designed to look good and go fast in a straight line would be nothing compared to something like the Impreza P1 or M3.

Though if it’s style you’re after, then whatever has your fancy will be the best. That’s where the Corvette really shines, if it’s your kind of thing.

Kinja'd!!! JR1 > RT
05/11/2017 at 07:28

Kinja'd!!!0

The driving experience in an old C3 would be a lot more raw. You’d smell the florcarbons, hear the deep wallop of the cams in the OHV V8, and with the tires being so far behind in tech you could light them up at every line.

As for driving experience in corners you can find a good C6 for this price. I would probably get one of those.

Kinja'd!!! RT > JR1
05/11/2017 at 09:29

Kinja'd!!!0

Just, from my personal standards, I don’t really understand why it’s worth choosing the Corvette over its rivals. You get a good looking body (C3) or lots of bang for your buck (C6), but they’re still huge and unwieldy cars - they’re full of cheap materials everywhere, chug petrol and have horrible ride quality. Basically, they’re a one trick pony.

Something like a M3 or Subie can do everyday car things a lot better, and still be just as rewarding to drive - and they’re usually a lot more fun in the corners, which is how I like it. If you want a more focused and raw sports car, then I’d take the TVR or Lotus route, because you get the best looks and handling for your money. The ‘Vettes do have some appeal to them though, they’re just not my cup of tea.

Kinja'd!!! JR1 > RT
05/11/2017 at 12:49

Kinja'd!!!0

There are numerous benefits to the Corvette. I’ve been in several C6 Vettes I can’t speak to the ride of a Sub or M3 but with the magnetic ride I think the Corvette is quite comfortable. The LS engine can easily get north of 26mpg on the highway so it doesn’t suck gas (compared to by GX470 the Vette is a Prius). Also every Corvette is a targa top so you get the beauties of top down motoring. And I’ve driven a truck or SUV all my life so to me the Vette isn’t large it’s pretty small but has a nice trunk for road trips. As for the interior materials C6 isn’t bad C5 is a joke I will admit but so where most 90s cars. You also get 400hp stock and the LS is endlessly customizable and easy and cheap to modify reliabiliy.

I’d love a Lotus Elsie but it has almost 150 less horsepower.

We don’t have TVR state side I have kinda always wanted a Tuscan they seem cool.

A Sub is awd and not being able to do burnouts would make me sad. The M3 is great but from what I gather far more expensive to maintain than a Vette.

Kinja'd!!! RT > JR1
05/11/2017 at 13:28

Kinja'd!!!0

Yep, on newer models you can at least get a quality ride and improved economy - the LS is a great engine too. That’s fixed a lot of problems already. Still not entirely on board, because at that price these newer models are approaching Porsche territory, but they have ironed out the Corvette’s shortcomings for sure.

The only thing holding me back are my own preferences really. I don’t really care too much about displacement or power at the crank, my biggest priorities are chuckable handling and good delivery, plus I have a thing for interiors and over-the-top engineering. That’s just me.

Thanks for explaining yourself properly and staying cool in these replies btw, nice to have a decent debate on the internet for once. :)

For 50k new in the US I would take the NA Vette or a Shelby GT350. What kills me most about the Europeans is they are all going Turbo and I miss the sound of the high revving NA motors Porsche and BMW used to offer.

But that’s the price you pay for clean air I suppose...

Kinja'd!!! RT > JR1

I prefer NA engines too, but you can always buy used BMWs and Porsche instead. Best of both worlds lol.
